Spokane Food: Greek Yogurt Vs. American Yogurt

December 8th, 2009

Zach Hunt asked:

You may have recently heard about a “new” food Greek Yogurt and wondered what all the fuss is about. Is it better for you? How does it taste? What is so special about Greek yogurt? Let’s take a look at this food and compare it to it’s American counterpart.

Yogurt basics:

This is a common food, a dairy product produced by bacterial fermentation of milk. Fermentation of the milk sugar (lactose) produces lactic acid, which acts on milk protein to give it its texture and its characteristic tang. It is nutritionally rich in protein, calcium, riboflavin, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12.

Yogurt has nutritional benefits beyond those of milk: people who are moderately lactose-intolerant can enjoy yogurt without ill effects, because the lactose in the milk precursor is converted to lactic acid by the bacterial culture. The reduction of lactose bypasses the affected individuals’ need to process the milk sugar themselves.

It also has medical uses, in particular for a variety of gastrointestinal conditions, and in preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea. One study suggests that eating yogurt containing L. acidophilus helps prevent vulvovaginal candidiasis, though the evidence is not conclusive. It is believed to promote good gum health, possibly because of the probiotic effect of lactic acids present in yogurt.

Greek yogurt:

This is a food which has been strained in a cloth or paper bag or filter, traditionally made of muslin, to remove the whey, giving a consistency between that of yogurt and cheese, while preserving yogurt’s distinctive sour taste. Like many yogurts, strained yogurt is often made from milk which has been enriched by boiling off some of the water content, or by adding extra butterfat and powdered milk. “Greek-style” yogurts are similar to Greek strained yogurt, but may be thickened with thickening agents. Or if made the traditional way, are based on domestic (rather than Greek) milk. Greek yogurt’s live and active culture content is much higher than that of regular yogurt. However it should be noted that liquid whey contains cystine, and amino acid that boosts your body’s level s of the Cancer-fighting compound glutathione.

What are probiotics and what good are they?

Yogurt, a great food contains probiotics. Probiotics are dietary supplements containing potentially beneficial bacteria or yeasts. According to the currently adopted definition by FAO/WHO, probiotics are: ‘Live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host.’

Probiotic bacterial cultures are intended to assist the body’s naturally occurring gut flora, an ecology of microbes, to re-establish themselves. They are sometimes recommended by doctors, and, more frequently, by nutritionists, after a course of antibiotics, or as part of the treatment for gut related candidiasis. Claims are made that probiotics strengthen the immune system to combat allergies, excessive alcohol intake, stress, exposure to toxic substances, and other diseases. In these cases, the bacteria that work well with our bodies may decrease in number, an event which allows harmful competitors to thrive, to the detriment of our health.

So, which is better, America yogurt or Greek Yogurt?

When it comes down to a choice between these great foods, both standard American yogurt and Greek yogurt are great for you, just in different ways. Greek yogurt is, for the most part, more concentrated than American yogurt, so it contains about twice as much protein as American yogurt. But the each contain high amounts of probiotics (although Greek yogurt contains more simply because it is so much more concentraited), so really, you don’t have to choose. Eat them both daily and you will benefit more than if you each just one of the two. And remember, a healthy diet alone won’t help you keep your weight and health in check.

Kevin Gianni asked:

This interview is an excerpt from Kevin Gianni’s Fountain of Youth Summit, which can be found at http://fountainofyouthworldsummit.com. In this excerpt, Dr. Gabriel Cousens shares what detoxification can do for you.

The Fountain of Youth World Summit with Dr. Gabriel Cousens, the founder of Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center and author of “Conscious Eating” and “Spiritual Nutrition.”

KEVIN: I am extremely excited about this. So, why don’t we start talking about detoxification? What’s your story? How did you get involved in this?

GABRIEL: Well, initially I was exploring it from a spiritual point of view. In 1982, on my own did a 40-day fast.

KEVIN: A-ha.

GABRIEL: It’s not the…probably the best way to start - it was a great way for me to start but I don’t really recommend it for most people.

KEVIN: [Laughs]

GABRIEL: In 1988, I really began to do fasting retreats for people.

KEVIN: A-ha.

GABRIEL: And did a lot of different researches. We’ve got along, and in fact right now, we are in the middle of a spiritual yoga juice fast.

KEVIN: OK.

GABRIEL: So, it’s really, fun to share that at the same time. At the Tree we do, we’ve evolved really 2 different fasts. One is where people who come every once a week, and what we’d just called a detox-fast.

KEVIN: OK.

GABRIEL: Then we had a spiritual fast, which is like a week-long seminar. It’s really a 9-day fast. So, that’s kind of what we do. It’s one of the main things we focus on. So we’ve developed a lot of research in technology along the way with that. I think the most important thing to understand is that fasting is the most natural and most powerful way to detox. Paracelsus, the great Renaissance physician in the 16th century and so forth, talked about that the most powerful healer is fasting.

KEVIN: A-ha.

GABRIEL: And Hippocrates, one of the great Greek physicians, said again, that fasting is the inner doctor. So, why does fasting work? It’s because it activates a vital life force, and it’s the vital life force which energizes the body that gives it enough energy to detox.

KEVIN: OK.

GABRIEL: So, the model we can hold is that the cells are filled with toxins but they’re also overloaded.

KEVIN: OK.

GABRIEL: And so they’re not as able to get the toxins out. So when we fast, we stimulate a process of energizing the cells, and also I’m going to use it to call it a process of diffusion. What we mean by that is, as you’re pulling toxins out by the act of fasting by doing what we do, eliminating in several areas, we do skin brushing which we’ll talk about…we do enemas and colonics.

KEVIN: A-ha.

GABRIEL: We do kidney and liver cleanses. We do breathing to clear the toxins out of the lung. We help people out gas, so they, they - here in Arizona you can be in nude outside in certain areas so you are getting a whole body air cleansing. So, all those things start to pull toxins out naturally. And in that way, it starts with …of the cells. But the key truly is the vital life force, and that’s strongly activated by the power of fasting.

KEVIN: OK. And you talked about detoxification, I mean, what are some of the things that we need to detoxify from?

GABRIEL: Life!

KEVIN: [laughs]

GABRIEL: Really, we have physical toxins, emotional, mental, and spiritual toxins.

KEVIN: OK.

GABRIEL: And when people come here to Patagonia, Arizona they were getting a very, very clean air and clean water. People are able then to rest and relax because in most people in the modern day world have lost touch with their rhythm.

KEVIN: OK.

GABRIEL: What life is about, they’ve lost touch with the meaning about what life is about, and in essence their mission, their sacred mission in life. And so fasting is a time to reestablish so we get in touch with your sacred rhythm, your sacred design, and also get in touch with the rhythm of the planet. We live in cities, what rhythm in the planet, you know?

KEVIN: Yeah.

GABRIEL: You can’t see the sunset because the skyscraper is in the way, and it’s like that kind of thing. So fasting, in a deeper way, helps you reconnect with your essential self. Now that being said, we are going to focus a little bit more on the physical part of it and different fasts have different effects.

KEVIN: OK.

GABRIEL: A 7-day fast is what we do. Now we - just to be clear, there are people who come here and fasted for 80 days.

KEVIN: Wow.

GABRIEL: 90 days, and had tremendous benefits. We will talk about that a little later. I think the one-week fast is maybe most appropriate for people and a good place to start. First of all, fasting is not a new thing. It’s 5000 years old. Almost every culture has done it.

KEVIN: A-ha.

GABRIEL: And in the animal world, dogs can fast up to 60 days. Salmon go upstream for months without food. Penguins go 3 months without food. It’s part of that - the cycle of nature.

KEVIN: OK.

GABRIEL: But why one week and why has that worked well. What we found is it takes about a week according to my research to get rid of the bowel toxins. Now, where do bowel toxins come from? Well, they come from this - most people have pathogenic bacteria in the bowel.

KEVIN: OK.

GABRIEL: And because we eat too much, and we’re not digesting well. And the …pathogenic bacteria begin to take the putrefied food, and it turns into toxins.

KEVIN: OK.

GABRIEL: That’s what we are talking about, specifically.

KEVIN: And those are being reabsorbed?

GABRIEL: And those get reabsorbed into the body. They go into the nervous system. They go into everywhere in the body. In 1917, just to make it clear, this is not some kind of a newfound idea, in 1917, Sedderly and Eldrich, two AMA physicians, okay?

KEVIN: A-ha.

GABRIEL: Now, this is the way from what the AMA people do now. But at that time, they were on it. They cited 517 cases whereby clearing the bowel toxicity, people reverse their depression, their anxiety, their paranoia, their lethargy, their stupor, their general feeling of malaise.

KEVIN: Wow!

GABRIEL: Really impressive! Okay, so they understood that the toxicity in your bowel was affecting your - functioning of your mind. It was affecting your mood. It was affecting your clarity. OK, and it’s true! The Russians had done some research with schizophrenics. And they took supposedly incurable schizophrenics and put them on a water fast. We don’t really recommend water fast. There is some danger to it, but I don’t even know if they have any juicers in Russia, so we’ll just put it that way.

KEVIN: [laughs]

GABRIEL: And particularly when this research was done, and what they found was 28-35 days in water which is a severe water fast. That 65 percent of the schizophrenics became healed.

KEVIN: Wow!

GABRIEL: And the only time that they relapsed is that they ate meat. Now, what’s the reason for that is schizophrenics have a certain metabolic pathway or some schizophrenics at least 65 percent.

KEVIN: A-ha.

GABRIEL: Where when they eat meat, the putrefactive bacteria produce 6 times higher 5-hydro skatole. Skatole is one of the bowel toxins. And that is what was literally making - have a schizophrenic nervous system.

KEVIN: OK.

GABRIEL: So, that’s how powerful it can be. Now in 1933, Dr. Bassler cited 5000 cases where people healed from sinus, sciatica, almost every element you can think of, you know arthritis, again emotional problems, and related again to clearing the bowel toxicity. So these are not a metaphor in other words. These are real - toxins are real things. You got skatole. I’m not going to list all, ammonia.

KEVIN: And how do you know if you have them?

GABRIEL: Well, everybody has them.

KEVIN: OK. [laughs]. So this is like, this is a blanket, everyone has this. It’s just a matter of how much and what levels they have?

GABRIEL: Exactly. Now, when you’re fasting, when we fast because we’re doing fasting all over the world, we have a fasting center in Israel as well.

KEVIN: A-ha.

GABRIEL: By the Dead Sea, so very much and they have seen kind way of being.

KEVIN: A-ha.

GABRIEL: And were having fast here, or you - you know, frequently besides our weekly 10-day detoxing. And basically if you don’t like foods, and you’re not overeating … foods then you’re fasting frequently, you’re not going to have much bowel toxins. You’ll have a little bit.

KEVIN: OK.

GABRIEL: Most people tend to build it up overtime, particularly if they aren’t taking a lot of acidophilus. So, it’s pretty endemic. And the good news is really in a pretty short time within 1 week, we measured the indican which is a measure for bowel toxicity.

KEVIN: OK.

GABRIEL: In 1 week, by day 6, most people, no excuse me, a hundred percent of the people we tested no longer were showing indican in their urine.

KEVIN: OK.

GABRIEL: So we pretty much know by day 6 on a juice fast, you’re going to be done with your bowel toxin. And that’s also about the time people’s mental state begins to clear. And they begin to get a tremendous amount of energy. There’s a lot of energy that you get when you get the toxins out. On a 60th birthday 4 years ago, we - on day 5 or 6, I did 601 push-ups.

KEVIN: OK.

GABRIEL: And that was something that I couldn’t do while I was eating. I was up to 550 something like that. I wasn’t breaking the barrier.

KEVIN: A-ha.

GABRIEL: The reason is, there’s this - even if someone who’s - you know eating the right foods, 100 percent right foods, and you know juicing, and doing all of that on a regular basis, there’s certain amount of toxins that you build up. That’s something in everyone.

KEVIN: OK.

GABRIEL: And just that difference of 5 days juicing cleared enough the toxins to give the extra strength. Once after a 7-day fasting, we did Mount Chester that was in the ’90s. We walked up, a group of us walked up Mount Chester. Usually, it’s a 2-day trip to go to 10,000 feet, and on the 2nd day you go, and you camp out, and then you go over 2000 feet.

KEVIN: A-ha.

GABRIEL: We started at 3′ o clock in the morning. We reached the peak by about 11.

KEVIN: Wow.

GABRIEL: And we just walked straight too because we had that extra energy.

KEVIN: Wow. That sounds good. I think it probably just about everyone in this call could use a little extra energy. [laughs].

The Mediterranean Diet: What The Greeks Know About Healthy Cuisine

November 29th, 2009

James Zeller asked:

Is there a painless way to lower cholesterol and lose weight? Can you eat your way there? Oh sure, you might say; but wait, consider the merits of the Mediterranean Diet. Virgin olive oil may be the perfect replacement for butter and margarine.

The Mediterranean Diet: What the Greeks Know about healthy cuisine

“If you have health, you probably will be happy, and if you have health and happiness, you have all the wealth you need, even if it is not all you want.” — Elbert Hubbard.

There are so many approaches to optimum wellness. Infomercials tell us about a variety of diet plans from pills and native plants to the benefits of liquid diets over conventional weight loss methods. What should you believe?

One of the clarion calls of caution is the old adage, “If it’s too good to be true - it probably is.”

The Mediterranean Diet relies solely on age old wisdom. Present research verification demonstrates that one man’s daily meal is another man’s trip to optimum wellness.

In Greece, certain symptoms of heart disease are among the lowest in the world. It would seem that the largest body of current scientific research indicates that a diet high in fruits and veggies along with routine consumption of whole grains, legumes, fish, low fat dairy products, olive oil and nuts provide long term and protective health benefits.

With the Mediterranean diet you will find that optimal health is even more important than the accompanying weight loss. What native Greek’s have intuitively known for centuries has now been linked to scientific data that shows adherence to common Mediterranean diet practices may result in a reduction in heart disease, increased life expectancy and reduced risk of some cancers. The health benefits of olive oil have long been realized in Greece.

The term “Mediterranean Diet” truly is a generic term because the diet in Greece remains varied. You will find influences from North Africa and Italy in many Greek dishes, however the island of Crete has proven a veritable treasure trove of health research. Residents of Crete have one of the lowest heart disease risks in the world.

Interestingly, western culture is looking into the health benefits found in countries like Greece, but many of the younger population in Greece are seeking out western cuisine. The trend has proven somewhat antithetical to the wellness experienced by older Greeks. While parents are consuming melons, stuffed tomatoes, salads and yogurt, the younger Greek generation are consuming cookies, hamburgers, French fries, pizza and pop. The result is an increase in obesity among Greek’s youth culture - researchers expect to see an accompanying rise in heart disease in the years to come.

With the Mediterranean diet, butter is replaced with the health benefits of olive oil, fast food lunches are replaced by a variety of fresh vegetables - snacks of chocolate and colas are replaced by fresh fruit and nuts.

Perhaps the reason you don’t hear as much about the Mediterranean diet as you might other weight loss plans is that there is no special pill to buy, no special formula to drink and no 12-step meal plan to purchase.

The Mediterranean diet works because common sense prevails in eating choices and a rise in HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) is an indicator they are doing something right. The health benefits of olive oil cannot be overstated and traditional Greek cooking utilizes garden fresh produce and extra virgin olive oil. In tandem, this common sense approach continues to see a lower incidence of heart disease and colon cancer along with an increase in life expectancy and a decrease in overall weight.

Basic Guide To Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis

November 21st, 2009
greek food
Paul Hata asked:

A person will never know if they are allergic to a certain type of food unless they have eaten the food allergen itself. It takes a certain amount of food for the reaction to take place and trigger a symptom.

Food allergy and anaphylaxis are closely related, but they have their own defining differences that will be discussed as you read on.

Plus, a person can also develop allergic reactions to foods that are closely related to the original food allergy he or she has. Say, an allergy to oysters can also lead to an allergic reaction when the person eats shrimp, crabs, or fish.

In food allergy, the individual’s immune system reacts in two ways. The body may respond through the use of mast cells. These mast cells can come about at just any part of the human body but its favorite spots make itself known to the world is in the throat, lungs, eyes, skin, and especially the organs of the gastrointestinal system. The other type of response is through the body’s release of immunoglobulin E antibodies that travel through the blood system. It then eventually causes the discharge of the body chemical histamine which then causes the activation of allergic reactions in the common body sites previously mentioned.

On the other hand, anaphylaxis is derived form the Greek words ana and phylaxis, which subsequently means back and protection. It is the abrupt allergic response that is much more intense than the common allergy which can be lethal to the sufferer. Chief causes of anaphylaxis include insect stings, skin contact to latex, medications, and food. Anaphylaxis may also be idiopathically caused or, in lay man’s terms, unknown causes.

Like in food allergy, anaphylaxis involves the reaction of the different body sites; the only difference is the intensity of the response and only a small amount of the allergen is needed for the reaction to take place. The time span before signs and symptoms become evident ranges from within a few seconds up to a few hours after allergen exposure.

Anaphylaxis can come about following the intake of food, skin contact, or even as simple as inhalation of the food aroma. The life threatening type of anaphylaxis is called anaphylactic shock. In anaphylactic shock, only a tiny amount of the food allergen is needed to cause death to the sufferer within moments of exposure.

Individuals who are in danger of undergoing an anaphylactic reaction are those who have a history of allergy to food, asthma, and eczema. They are more likely to experience an anaphylactic response that can be fatal. Another population group who are also at risk of anaphylaxis, through the evidences of current studies that have been conducted, is teenagers who are afflicted with a certain type of food allergy. This is due to the fact that teenagers have frequent tendencies to eat out, are daring and experimental in their endeavors, and are more likely to fail to identify symptoms of anaphylactic reaction. Moreover, teenagers have tendencies to forget to carry with them essential medications which can either be caused by self-consciousness common to their age group.

Symptoms of anaphylaxis may be similar to that of food allergies. Basically, an incident of anaphylaxis initially starts with an itchy or irritating sensation, and some individuals experience a metallic after-taste. Anaphylactic symptoms may also include hot flashes or sudden warm feeling, inflammation of the throat and oral cavity, hives, dyspnea or labored breathing, low blood pressure, diarrhea, gastric irritations, and fainting or loss of consciousness.

Furthermore, there are cases wherein the symptoms fade away for a moment but then come back within a few hours; this incidence is known as biphasic reaction.

To prevent food allergy and anaphylactic reactions, careful scrutiny of food labels, diet modifications, specific instructions in food orders in restaurants, and certain medications can be of great help in reducing the incidence of any type of reaction. Moreover, a consultation to the physician is advisable for an efficient management plan and if allergies seem to run in families because it can also be hereditarily caused.

Food Matters and Can be Used to Prevent a Vast of Ailments

November 6th, 2009
greek food
Paul Phillips asked:

Roughly 400 years ago Greek physician Hippocrates made the statement: ‘Let your medicine be your food and your food be your medicine’, which is regarded by many to be true to this day.

However, many orthodox medical doctors, who have had very little training in nutrition, don’t see eye to eye with Hippocrates’ statement and don’t support the idea that food has real healing powers.

-So here’s the paradox: If food is necessary to keep you alive, then why can’t it be used as a healer?

Fortunately, there is a great deal of documentary scientific evidence to show that food indeed is a very powerful healer for a vast array of ailments and gets to the root cause of illness.

Healing Foods

Do you remember, as a child, being told by your mother to eat all your carrots because they are good for your eyes? Later on in life, you may have been told that this was just an “old wives tale”. Guess what, recent studies have shown that Mom was right! Foods can prevent eye disease, heart disease, arthritis and more.

Some Basic Science:

In more recent years scientists have discovered that foods contain “phytochemicals”, a fancy name for naturally occurring chemicals. This is not the same as nutrients, which we all know are the substances necessary for sustaining life.

Phytochemicals are substances that have properties that can aid in disease prevention and even cures. Scientists have identified thousands of these chemicals in the foods we eat and a single serving of fruits or vegetables can contain as many as one hundred different phytochemicals.

The most commonly known phytochemicals are the antioxidants. Antioxidants protect our cells from damage from toxic substances and from free radicals, a by-product produced by our bodies converting oxygen into energy. Free radicals can damage cells in our bodies and lead to disease. Antioxidants protect the body from oxidation and reduce the risk of acquiring many of our common ailments.

Fruits and Vegetables

In fruits and vegetables you can tell which of the main phytochemicals they contain by their color. Fruits and vegetables that are orange in color, such as carrots, cantaloupes and mangoes contain beta-carotene.

Those that are red in color, such as tomatoes, watermelon, and pink grapefruit contain lycopene.

Yellow fruits and vegetables such as pineapples, oranges, & peaches contain beta cryptothanxin.

Indoles can be found in the green vegetables, like broccoli, cabbage, and kale.

Purple fruits and vegetables such as blueberries, grapes, and eggplant (aubergines) contain anthocyanins.

Allicin can be found in garlic, onions, and chives.

Five Healthy Diet Foods That Will Protect Against Disease

October 30th, 2009
greek food
Tim Godfrey asked:

As well as being one of the most realistic and safest ways to lose weight, the Mediterranean diet can also help prevent serious diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

In fact, the American Heart Association refers to the Mediterranean Diet as the ‘gold standard’ in heart disease prevention and if followed could greatly reduce the numbers of cardiovascular disease sufferers which currently runs at over 72 million in America alone. Heart disease also causes almost 50 per cent of deaths in Europe, and is reported to cost the EU economy an estimated $200 billion each year.

Obesity is now recognised as a serious problem affecting many populations around the world. In fact, the governments in Great Britain, Europe and the US have put it, and its associated conditions such as ‘type 2 diabetes’, at the top of their public health agendas. The news that obesity-related procedures have quadrupled since 2000 as well as recent stories such as the 34 stone teenage girl from Scotland who under-went radical stomach surgery have highlighted the gravity of the situation.

The seriousness of this problem could be easily be lessened however if the public were to make a big effort to change their diets to a Mediterranean style of eating. It would not take long to start seeing noticeable differences.

If fully incorporated into our diets, the following five foods would make a staggering improvement to the health of our nation:

1. Olive oil.

Ample medical research has shown that the benefits of olive oil may go way beyond its wonderful taste. A study by Greek scientists at the University of Athens found that this monounsaturated oil, which is rich in antioxidants, may be the key to the healthy Mediterranean diet meaning a lower risk of heart attacks, diabetes and colon cancers.

2. Garlic.

Used for centuries to ward off everything from vampires to evil spirits, garlic is high in vitamins C and B6 and it contains powerful anti-bacterial and anti-viral agents that help fight common colds and flu. Regular consumption of garlic is also believed to protect against cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

3. Oily fish

Oily fish contains omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to be responsible for a range of health benefits, including protection against heart disease, stroke, arthritis and psoriasis. Studies have shown that fish is one of the world’s healthiest foods. Fatty fish such as salmon is packed with protein, niacin and Omega-3, an essential fatty acid that promotes healthy cardiovascular activity. Omega-3 may also protect against a host of health concerns from obesity to sunburns. A 2005 study published by the Archives of Neurology claims that eating fish once a week may even slow the rate of cognitive decline

4. Tomatoes.

Fiber-rich tomatoes are low in calories and high in vitamin C, vitamin A, and cancer-preventing lycopene. Like olive oil, tomatoes are an important part of the Mediterranean diet. Several studies have found tomatoes are also beneficial in fighting various forms of cancer. Fact: although often classified as vegetables, tomatoes are, technically, fruit.

5. Oats.

A steaming bowl of fresh cooked oatmeal is the perfect way to start off your day, especially if you are trying to prevent or are currently dealing with heart disease or diabetes. Oats, oat bran, and oatmeal contain a specific type of fiber known as beta-glucan. Since 1963, study after study has proven the beneficial effects of this special fiber on cholesterol levels. Studies show that in individuals with high cholesterol (above 220 mg/dl), consuming just 3 grams of soluble oat fiber per day (an amount found in one bowl of oatmeal) typically lowers total cholesterol by 8-23%

The Power of Good Food

October 23rd, 2009
greek food
Paul Phillips asked:

ant to really get this profoundly. The aim of good food is to give people the opportunity to profoundly realise the great health potential and healing power of nutrition. Through this, they can educate themselves and make informed choices on matters regarding health. In effect, good food provides vital life saving information. It shows how the major life-threatening diseases such as, heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and many other illnesses can be prevented or reversed using nutrition. Yes, as incredible as this may seem to some, whether it is through a strict dietary regimen called ‘metabolic nutritional therapy’, or just by simply eating the appropriate food, the results have been amazing. Good food shows how you can use these nutrition secrets for vitality and invariably slowing down the ageing process.

-All the necessary scientific evidence and case testimonies can be found in support of this effectiveness of nutrition.

This is something that should not be missed. It is indeed a massive opportunity to address the most important thing in your life: The only thing worth living for, your freedom and in this particular case, it comes in the wave shape and form of your health through nutrition.

Why has the role of nutrition been so greatly underestimated?

Some readers may be thinking to themselves: If nutrition was so good, why haven’t I heard about it?

-The answer is this. These are the circumstances why it has not made it to mainstream: The pharmaceutical companies and the government (who rake in huge revenues from the former) don’t want you know that there are cheap, alternative and natural, non-toxic methods towards the prevention of illness. If they allowed the people in the masses to be let in on this well-kept secret, then they would lose out on their profit machine.

Pharmaceuticals do not cure people. They only treat the symptoms. Take for example, a person suffering from a hangover the morning after. Although his parrots eat em’ all provides temporary pain relief, the problem related, the hangover, persists, because the underlying root cause is still there.

In many circumstances, as long as individuals are not cured, then they could be paying for treatment for the rest of their lives… Hence the saying

‘A patient cured to a pharmaceutical company is a patient lost.’

Contained in good food are leads to many solutions: How to cure many ailments with nutrition. Take some of these amazing examples, in good food, it points to where there have been proven solutions with all the convincing documentary evidence to support that diseases like cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes have been reversed and cured using different types of nutritional therapy. The success rate has been very high.

Some disturbing background

There is much deception on this planet. Much of it is being run and overseen by a few select handfuls of elite individuals. It is clear to me, and many others growing in numbers, that the motive of this deception is for power, profit and ultimately, control over the masses. It works on the principle that the masses, the people at large, are kept in the dark over the elite’s deception through ignorance, misinformation, disinformation, cover-ups and downright lies: Generally, the people at large blindly accept the words of authorities. The elite’s propaganda machine, the paid off media, greatly contribute towards the deception or theatre of illusion. This occurs in many things. Business, banking, finance, commerce, politics, the military, education, religion… and there is no better example of this deception than in the way in which the medical pharmaceutical establishment and food industry is run.

Some may have a hard time in accepting this. Well, that’s okay, but rather than dismiss it, I ask you to consider looking into the ways in which the deception works and I’ll bet you’ll come to the same conclusions as me.

Let’s look at some general underlying principles. Take the case of the latter two I mentioned above. The medical / pharmaceutical establishment and the food industry.

The way the deception works

As I have said before, any solutions of a nutritional kind is carefully kept under wraps by the pharmaceutical companies and the government, who heavily sponsor the media and pay them off not to publicise. Over the years, dedicated and brilliant people of a humanitarian nature who have come up with nutritional methods for cures of illnesses have been deliberately ignored, quashed or even ridiculed. Even when they had achievesd genuinely successful methodologies.

In other words, the pharmaceutical companies and their influence over the medical establishment, together with the government has become the order of the day. This, indeed, quite simply is a case of putting profits before the welfare concern of the people, which of course, is not acceptable. It is indeed an example of how we are not living in a democracy.

And that’s not all…

-This corporate soulless greed machine method of control and suppression is also demonstrated in the food industry. A a matter of fact, both pharmaceuticals and food products undergo the same pattern when it comes to making decisions over what should go on to the market. It goes like this.

Approval bodies such as the FDA (The Food and Drug administration), the United States set up, comprise a group of individuals who decide what food and drugs are safe to go on the market. Many of these individuals have ties with the very pharmaceutical or food companies they are judging! So any real decision-making made from these people will be most likely in favour of the pharmaceutical or food companies.

Evidence has been shown time and time again that these individuals have been biased. It has also been shown that some of those who were not tied to companies during the time of the decision-making were later on. For example, some individuals who had been on the FDA later became appointed on the board of directors of the pharmaceutical companies.

-This has introduced a level of corruption that has allowed many harmful foods and drugs to go on the market.

Well-documented cases where there have been health-damaging side effects from harmful food and drugs have been given little or no publicity.

Junk food and potentially harmful foods have found their way on to the shelves of supermarkets, care of slick advertising and marketing. There is much trickery and deception involved in this.

Good food can give much information on the subject of junk food.

The main thing for now is to get smart and realise there is a game going on played by the people mentioned in the point who obviously don’t really care about your health. Good food will allow you to profoundly realise that the above authorities have a power and political game going on and don’t have your best health interests at heart: Knowing what to look for and how to distinguish good from bad nutrition is the key.

Copy Cat Raw Food Recipes - How To Make Almond Milk

Helen Hecker asked:

If you’ve thought about eating a healthier diet a good way to do it is by substituting some raw food recipes for some of the daily cooked food recipes you use now. This is just another way to look at copy cat recipes.

Although most people think a raw food diet consists of eating fruits and salads and maybe a handful of nuts and seeds, the raw food diet is much more than that. You can prepare dozens of copy cat recipes, those that mimic the standard American diet fare you are probably used to eating.

For example one of the best raw food recipes that is easy to make is almond milk. You can easily make your own almond milk cheaply, at home, to substitute for harmful cow’s milk and boxed soy and rice products. Soy milk and other boxed milks are highly processed. Although a better alternative to cow’s milk they still do not have the health benefits you get from a nice tall glass of homemade almond milk.

Making almond milk is relatively easy and doesn’t require any unusual ingredients. You can use dates, honey or agave nectar for sweetener and still keep it in its living or alive state.

To make almond milk you only need about a cup of raw almonds. Make sure not to buy or use roasted almonds. You soak these overnight in pure water, drain and put in a blender along with 3 cups of pure filtered or spring water and blend for about 2 1/2 minutes. Then pour into a nut milk bag, sprout bag or fine mesh strainer. Squeeze tightly if you are using a bag. Pour into a glass jar, add your sweetener and refrigerate.

Almond milk will keep for up to five days or so. Use it on sliced strawberries and bananas in a bowl, drink as is, add nutmeg for an eggnog flavor etc. Use it wherever you would use other milks.

Of course it can be used on cereal, muesli, granola in a bowl if you still eat those. At the least try to incorporate it into your diet. It’ll vastly help improve your health. This is especially true if you eliminate cow’s milk and other dairy products. Raw food diets are the healthiest diets and help you lose weight naturally.

There are many other copy cat raw food recipes you can make with living foods that will replace the cooked foods in your diet. If you’re a mom with young kids or teenagers, you will be greatly benefiting your kids’ diets with almond milk and other great living food recipes. They will never know the difference and their overall health will benefit. There are many other simple and easy raw food recipes you can fix for breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner.

The Benefits of Switching to Raw Food Recipes

Amelie Mag asked:

Consuming raw foods is natural. Our bodies respond very well to all that is fresh and vital and thrive when consuming these types of food. By increasing the amount of raw food that you eat you are actually opting for a feeling of increased well being. When you switch to a raw food diet, the raw food recipes are based on uncooked or unprocessed plant foods, preferably organic. These plant foods include a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, grains, dried fruit, fresh juices and purified water.

The reason why you should switch to raw food recipes is because it is basically a vegetarian diet that promotes eating and drinking living foods. By consuming living foods and juices, you benefit from the maximum amount of fiber that can be found in a raw product. This fiber can be lost when the food is either processed or cooked. Raw foods are metabolized easier and are not as high in calories as the products consumed when following an average diet. The basic principle of a raw food diet is heating the foods up to 1160 F or about 460 C. The reason why you should not heat them at higher temperatures is found in the enzymes that are destroyed when subjected to such temperatures. The enzymes help food digestion and food absorption and they also give the nutritional value of foods. Therefore it is in our best interests to keep them intact. In the opposite situation, we actually force our bodies to an increased amount of work and we also contribute to the diminishing of the nutritional value of our food.

Subsequently, the benefits of raw food recipes are numerous. If you have a diet consistent of at least 75% raw foods you will receive health benefits such as increased energy, improved skin appearance, better digestion, weight loss or weight gain (depending on what your body needs). Other benefits include reducing the risks of serious illnesses like heart diseases, cancer, diabetes and more.

Raw food recipes are based on components that contain little or no saturated fats. Also, they are low in sodium, but high on magnesium, potassium and fiber. You can also use raw food recipes as detoxification solutions. If you appeal to different combinations of raw, living foods and juices you may find that they are useful for colon cleansing, liver cleansing, kidney cleansing and skin cleansing.

The reasons why you should appeal to a raw food diet may vary. Depending on these reasons, you can choose what to consume in order to improve that aspect of your health you are particularly interested in. For instance, sprouted brown rice helps slow glucose absorption and improve the metabolism; cabbage supports cellular function while radish leaves act as an anti-oxidant; carrots, a great source of vitamin A, are well-known to encourage healthy eyesight, but they also support a reliable cardio-vascular system.

Some people enjoy eating cakes and sweets. If you switch to a raw food diet, you shouldn’t think that you have to stop eating desserts. In a raw food diet you can use raw honey as a sweetener. Raw honey contains traces of propolis, a substance used by bees to seal the hive and protect it from harmful microorganisms. Other substances found in raw honey, called phytonutrients, help prevent colon cancer and can also help heal internal ulcers.

If you consume honey regularly, it is known to be beneficial for the general well-being and it also helps digestion. Amazing as it sounds, raw honey has been shown to improve athletic performance, a secret that was discovered by ancient Olympians. This happens because it helps maintain balanced levels of blood sugar, which in turn helps at keeping energy levels consistent. In addition, it helps muscle recovery. Other amazing properties of raw honey include the support it gives to the immune system in warding off colds and flu. It is a healthy substitute for sugar that can even help reduce the cholesterol levels. Include it in your raw food recipes and you will get the best for your body and mind.

Soul Food Recipes From The Caribbean, Yummy

Wycliffe Williams asked:

Soul food recipes come from the earliest inhabitants of the Caribbean islands. They were the three Indian tribes of Arawak, Carib, and Taino. Their daily food comprised of vegetables and fruits. It was the Taino tribe that first started cooking meat and fish, using large clay vessels.

The Arawaks used a different method. They used thin strips of green wood to cook meat more slowly and allowing it to absorb the flavor of the wood. The wooden grate they used was called barbacoa. This is where the term barbeque comes from.

Not to be left behind, the Carib tribe made their fish and meat recipes really spicy by adding pepper sauces, lime, and lemons. In fact, the Caribs are credited with having cooked the first pepper pot stew. The last of the above three has had a tremendous impact on Caribbean food.

This should not be surprising because the Caribbean Sea was named after this tribe. Caribbean soul food recipes are still representative of the food that was originally eaten by the early inhabitants. It includes okra, fish cakes, callaloo, ackee, salt fish, pudding, souse, cassava, yams, sweet potatoes, plantains, and mangoes.

The concept of jerk cooking also originated in the Caribbean. Early African hunters would often leave their homes to go on long hunts. They would take with them pork cooked in a very spicy recipe over hot coals.

In the post slavery era, Indian cooking culture was introduced into Caribbean soul food recipes and still remains an active part of the Caribbean cuisine. Most of the curried meats and curry powder recipes that are found today are directly derived from original Indian cuisine.

Rice was introduced to the Caribbean by the Chinese and is now a staple. The Chinese also unleashed mustard on the islanders while the Portuguese sailors did the codfish. Most of the fruit trees that are familiar to the visitors to the island were actually brought here by the Spainish.

This included orange, ginger, lime, figs, plantains, sugar cane, tamarinds, grapes, and coconuts. America brought with it the various beans, squash, corn, tomatoes, potatoes, and chili pepper. In fact, some of these foods spread to the rest of world through the Caribbean.

Caribbean cuisine is truly a mix of several cooking styles from all over the world. It retains much of the original culinary skills of the islands native inhabitants. If you are bored with what you eat daily Caribbean food will cure that.

If you do not have time to go on a lengthy Caribbean vacation then bring the beaches and the sunshine right into your home through your kitchen using a Caribbean recipe. These are but a few reasons why Caribbean food is so unique and creative. Flavors from all over the world have found a home in Caribbean food through countless generations and the flow of history.
