Eric Taylor asked: Holistic pet foods are, often reflexively, considered by many to be the healthiest pet foods available. What is the definition of ‘holistic’ and what does it mean in the pet food industry? The term ‘holistic’ is derived from the Greek word ‘holos,’ which means ‘all,’ ‘entire,’ or ‘total.’ It implies that the sum properties of a system (e.g., a body) can only be explained adequately if all its parts are considered in unity instead of on an individual basis. Or, as Aristotle summarized it, ‘The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.’ The principle of ‘holistic medicine’ has been recognized and applied intuitively by many cultures to the present day. Although the holistic approach was eventually lost to the majority of people in the Western world, eventually the concept was rediscovered by ‘holistic’ physicians, who realized that one cannot heal the whole person if one considers only the part of the body that shows the most obvious symptoms of disease.
Increasing numbers of veterinarians have come to see the importance of the holistic approach in the treatment of their animal patients. For example, what’s the benefit of recommending repeated administration of a stool softener to an animal that is constipated without correcting the underlying cause of this symptom? In many cases, this would simply amount to evaluating the animal’s diet for possible causes of the condition. The same applies to other diseases, such as eczema, which are often caused by food allergens. How could a topical cream restore health if a food allergen was the culprit?
Holistic treatments look beyond the surface veneer of disease symptoms, and a good holistic veterinarian will always inquire about a pet’s diet, which is one of the most prominent factors determining states of both health and disease. Considering that the vast majority of a pet’s immune system is located in the intestines, it is understandable that food is supremely important for maintaining good health. Food loaded with toxins or deficient of nutrients will eventually affect the entire body. Although symptoms may only become obvious in one location, it is likely that more than one organ will be knocked out of balance. Instead of treating the symptoms, one might consider the fundamental causes of the ailment and treat the animal holistically.
Here’s where holistic pet foods come in. As food is a major determining factor of pet health, the concept of a food that nourishes the entire system becomes extraordinarily important as a major means of disease prevention. Any sincere attempts undertaken by pet food manufacturers to offer holistic pet food is the highest ethical endeavor in this industry. The term ‘holistic pet food’ is being exploited excessively, much as the terms ‘organic’ and ‘natural’ have been misused for some time.
It is not enough to omit obviously toxic ingredients to pet foods to rightfully call them holistic. Pet foods that are truly holistic not only not do no harm, but actually support the body’s endeavor to remain fully functional, and in doing so, support the animal’s overall wellbeing and happiness. The best holistic commercial pet foods are those that contain highest quality, health-promoting ingredients which are not heat-treated and allow keeping supplementation with isolated nutrients down to the absolute required minimum.

Jennifer McVey asked: There are many places to find dog food recipes if you are considering making your pet’s food. There are also important points to think about when you make their food like sticking to the recipe, talking to a veterinarian, and paying attention to how your dog reacts to the food.
Two common places to find dog food recipes are on the Internet and through your local veterinarian. The Internet is not always trustworthy though. You cannot be sure that someone who posted their own idea for a dog food recipe is the right meal for your dog. Some of the factors might include the type of dog that they have and the types of foods in the recipe. If the dog food recipes are coming from a credible place on the internet like an animal shelter, a veterinarian, or some other place you can trust then you most likely are safe to use the recipe.
The best place to find dog food recipes is through your local veterinarian. Your vet already knows your dog best. He or she knows their digestive tract and what kinds of foods you can start your pet off with and how you can transition your animal from traditional dog food to homemade food. Many veterinarians already have recipes they can give to you so you can go home and make your pets food. Working with your vet ensures the health of your animal.
Switching your dog over to homemade dog food is a big transition. Your animal may not take the food change very well at first. For instance, your dog may not seem as if they like it or they might not be eating as much. You will notice a change in their stools. Your animal may vomit for a couple of days because their digestive tract is not used to healthy food. Be sure during the transition your dog is getting plenty of water. One thing that might be recommended is that you slowly break your dog into the new dog food rather than do a total change at once.
When you make homemade dog food, even the vet will tell you not to change the recipe. You might think you are being creative or making your pet happy by adding bacon grease to the mixture, don’t. You also should not substitute foods within a dog food recipe. Stick to the recipe. If the recipes are too expensive for you then you might not be able to afford feeding your dog homemade foods. Many people have made their animals very sick by not properly cooking the foods to save time or substituting foods to save money. For your dog’s health, stick to the recipes.
Dog food recipes are fantastic when you find them from the right sources. You should only trust your veterinarian or a reliable source for a recipe and you should follow it exactly. The purpose of making homemade dog food is for your dog’s health. So you should follow the recipes and pay attention to how your pet responds.

Animal Shelter, Couple Of Days, Homemade Recipes

Sherrie Chastain asked: Making your own homemade dog food with this recipe is easy and will give your dog the best all natural dog foods available. Just remember that in the wild your dog would catch small prey and eat the whole thing. This consisted of the meat, bones, organs, even the heart, brain and eyes (which are high in taurine). The vegetables they would get were in the stomach and digestive tract of the animals already partially digested. If you make your all natural dog foods to imitate your dogs prey hey will enjoy optimum health and love you for it.
Meats need to be fed one animal at a time. In the wild your dog would not eat more than one kind of meat at once. The meat should be ground or served in chunks which are easier to eat. Larger pieces will cause your dog to hold them with their feet to rip the meat apart, which can get messy.
Do not feed any fat that has been cooked which can lead to problems with your dog’s pancreas. Remember in the wild your dog would only get the fat that was on the animal and eaten raw. Use the skin that comes on the meat of in the case of beef the fat riddled throughout the meat.
Meats that cause trichinosis should never be fed like pork, bear, seal, ground squirrels, etc. However specialty meats like moose, ox, venison or bison are very pure and nutrient dense and can be fed in smaller quantities occasionally. Soft boiled eggs are also a good protein source, feed shells and all.
Organ meats are also very nutrient dense so use organ meat sparingly in your homemade dog food recipe. Either feed organ meats a couple of times a week for the meat portion or feed small amounts daily. Brains, heart and eyes are very high in taurine which is an essential amino acid for a healthy dog.
Vegetables are also essential in the best all natural dog foods. Remember to shred vegetables in a blender or food processor, your dog was used to getting them predigested in the wild. Use 3 or four different kinds of vegetables, preferably different colors to receive a wide variety of nutrients. The darker the vegetable, the more nutritious it will be in your all natural dog foods homemade dog food recipe.
It is best to avoid vegetables from the nightshade family like eggplants, green peppers, potatoes, onions, chives, garlic and tomatoes. These vegetables are associated with arthritis problems. Spinach also has a high oxalic content which can lead to kidney stones.
The best ingredients for the best all natural dog foods in your homemade dog food recipe are free range or organic meat because of the amount of toxins in meat and organic vegetables or peel the skin or wash with a spray to remove pesticides. Organic is always the best choice for all natural dog foods. Warm purified water is also an essential element in the best homemade dog food recipe. If these ingredients are not available use what you have, because it will make better all natural dog foods than you can purchase. Do not make your homemade dog food recipe because you cannot get all organic, what you make will be much more nutritious than any all natural dog foods you can buy.
Mix the meat at about 75% with the vegetables about 25% of the homemade dog food recipe. Puppies need a little more meat to vegetables since they are growing. Mix enough warm water to make a stew consistency. Meat and vegetables should be raw with the vegetables shredded finely. If you see vegetables in your dogs stool they are not chopped fine enough.
Your dog will eat until he is full. A good rule of thumb is about a pound of all natural dog foods per fifty pounds of your dog’s body weight. Do not feed your dog again until he has eliminated the previous meal or this can cause digestive problems for your dog. Always introduce any change in your dog’s diet slowly, increasing the new food daily until you have switched your dog over to the new all natural dog foods.
Using these simple guidelines you can make your dog the best all natural dog foods from your own homemade dog food recipe so your dog can enjoy optimum health. Your dog will love you for it.

Sherrie Chastain asked: The best all natural dog foods or homemade dog food recipe contains calcium because dogs need a 2:1 ratio of Calcium to Phosphorous. Meat is high is phosphorous so calcium must be supplemented to keep this important 2:1 ratio of Calcium to Phosphorous.
In the wild your dog would have satisfied this 2:1 ratio when eating its prey because the bones of the prey would contain the calcium needed to offset the phosphorous in the meat.
Why Bone Meal is Not the Best Choice for your All Natural Dog Foods
Food grade bone meal was always recommended in the past however it is not the best choice for the best all natural dog foods or your homemade dog food recipe. Bone meal contains phosphorous along with calcium so it would be impossible to maintain the 2:1 ratio your dog needs. Using Bone meal will usually put your dog at a 1:3 ratio with the Phosphorous being 3 times higher than Calcium, which could cause devastating health issues for your dog.
The other main reason Bone meal is not the best choice for calcium supplementation in your all natural dog foods and homemade dog food recipe is that bones hold toxins especially metals like lead which would be passed onto your dog. Bones can also hold disease like mad cows disease, which would be very dangerous for your dog.
Finely Ground Egg Shells Are the Best Choice for All Natural Dog Foods and your Homemade Dog Food Recipe
Not only are eggs a wonderful source of protein for your all natural dog foods and your homemade dog food recipe, the egg shells are the best source of calcium supplementation available. Finely ground egg shells do not contain phosphorous so you can maintain the important 2:1 Calcium, Phosphorous ratio your dog needs. You can use your own egg shells plus they are readily available commercially.
8 Large eggs will give you about 1 teaspoon of finely ground egg shells which is the amount to supplement 1 pound of all natural dog foods or your homemade dog food recipe. One pound of all natural dog foods or your own homemade dog food recipe will feed a 50 pound dog each day.
What If My All Natural Dog Foods Do Not Contain Calcium?
A lack of Calcium can cause dental facial problems for your dog which are irreversible. There are many other functions and benefits beyond the obvious of minerals like calcium. Calcium is important for strong bones, it also is said to help with blood clotting, activating enzyme action, and in helping with normalizing the contraction and relaxation of the heart muscles.
Don’t underestimate minerals; they are the spark plugs of life. Calcium is the single most important supplement you can provide your pets.
Otto Warburg the Nobel Prize winner discovered that all disease in people ties back to mineral deficiency. If we have become so diseased after changing our diets to processed foods after thousands of years, why can’t our pets be suffering from the same problem?
Choose your all natural dog foods and supplements wisely; your dog’s health and well being depends on it.

Razak Haruna asked: Raw dog food recipes are the very best way for your dog to eat a natural diet.
Dogs are born hunters. However they have obviously had their hunting needs taken away from them as they became domesticated, with owners placing bowls of food out everyday - there is no need for a dog to hunt for raw meat anymore.
Unfortunately many owners do not realize what a dog’s natural diet should be. That is why raw dog food recipes come into importance.
Dogs need raw food to maintain their natural health. Out in the wild, dogs kill other animals and eat their raw meat. There is no cooking or factory manufacturing as is seen in dog food today. And there is certainly no left over dinners - something many owners are guilty of indulging their dogs in!
This advice applies to cats as well. Cats are predators in the same way that dogs are and therefore are made for a raw food diet.
A simple raw dog food recipe would consist of raw meat, vegetable puree, some cooked whole grains, kelp powder, ascorbic acid and around 1 teaspoon of oil (don’t go overboard on the oil).
This recipe will provide your dog with a huge amount of health benefits such as increased energy, a healthy digestive and immune system, cleaner teeth and gums, healthier skin and coat and smoother stool motions.
On top of all this, your dog will be delighted to be receiving food that is in tune with his natural diet. Dogs were MADE to eat raw food. Giving your dog cooked and manufactured food all the time is doing him a great disservice to his health and happiness.
Do your dog a favor and start putting together some raw dog food recipes for him to enjoy! He will thank you for it and will live a longer healthier life with you!

Abhinav Sidana asked: A Natural raw dog food recipe is the best thing for you to make for your dog when you want to provide them a natural diet. Many pet owners do not know about the great benefits that a natural diet can offer their pets or what kind of things should be included in a natural diet. This is where a good raw dog food recipe comes into play.
Dogs are basically hunters by nature but they have been changed to be domestic animals. Since the dog no longer has any need to hunt for food because of the owners feeding them each day, the canine miss out on the raw meat they grew to enjoy. A raw dog food recipe can assist the owner in creating a meal for their canine that gives them the right amount of what they need without all the junk that goes into the typical store brand dog food.
It is essential that dogs get a raw dog food recipe to keep them healthy. In the wild, the hunt produces raw meat that is not cooked like the food is today. Cats can also be fed a raw diet as they come from the same background as the dogs in that they are natural predatory animals.
Ingredients included in a raw dog food recipe might be a raw meat of some kind, pureed vegetables, whole grains which have been cooked, oil, and others. The raw meat is usually form raw chicken or beef.
A raw dog food recipe gives large benefits to your animal. It helps to increase their energy level, a healthy running immune system and digestive tract, teeth and gums that are cleaner looking, skin and coats that appear healthier, and stools that move easier.
Your dog will love this new diet made from the natural things they need and have been deprived of for so long. It gives them a natural diet they can benefit from. By providing your canine with a natural raw dog food recipe each day, you are taking the additives, fillers, preservatives, and other harsh ingredients that could rob him of extra years. So leave the commercial Dog food and prepare Natural raw dog food recipe at home only.

Dede Purneim asked: Feeding your dog by using proper homemade dog food recipe means providing the proper nutrition in order to keep its healthy and fit.
Dog biscuit
This dog biscuit recipe is very simple. You start with a fourth cup carrots, three cups of parsley chopped up very fine, one forth of a cup of cheese, grated fine. A good tip is to make sure your dog likes the particular kind of cheese before you make the biscuits. Usually, mozzarella or Parmesan is the best to use.
No Chocolate
As we know that chocolate contains bromine, which is very toxic to dogs. None-sweet chocolate is by far the worst to feed to your dog, as it contains a large amount of bromine. Bromine is a very harmful chemical, one that normally leads to death of your animal should he be fed any type of chocolate.
Kibble
This is known as dry dog food, is the most popular kind of dog food, and it’s also the easiest and most inexpensive to feed. Some dried foods are pretty decent; others are heavily processed and low on the nutrition scale. Read the label carefully to make sure that meat and not grains are the primary source of protein. Human grade whole meat such a chicken, beef, or lamb (not meat byproducts or “meal”) is the best choice, and should be listed first on the ingredient label.
Bones
Dogs love bones of all types. However, some bones can be dangerous. The one of the safest bones you can give your dog is a shinbone. If you must give your dog a bone, make sure you supervise your pooch and if he or she shows signs of bleeding, then you should call your vet immediately for some advice.
Choose pet food with this ingredient ratio.
It is important to understand that a typical dog’s diet consists of 40% protein, 30% fiber and 30% starch. Read the guaranteed analysis to be certain. If you really want to know what’s in your dog’s food, try making your own dog food. There are plenty of recipes and meal plans available online. Consult with your veterinarian to make sure the diet is well-balanced.

hasson jodan asked: Choosing which dog food to feed your dog with is not an easy choice. There are so many dog foods available, it can be bewildering. You’d be wise to ask your vet for some suggestions and for a guide on how much your dog needs to eat and what type of diet he should have.
A balanced and nutritious diet is essential for your dog’s health. Though dogs have an inherent liking for meat-based foods, they can very well survive on a vegetarian diet, provided it’s complete with all the required nutrients.
Water is an essential component of a dog’s body, and your pet should have access to it at all times – this could prevent dehydration and overheating. As far as the number of feedings is concerned, for an adult dog, one or two feedings a day would suffice. However, puppies need to eat more frequently than an adult dog. Up to fifty percent of an adult dog’s diet may comprise of carbohydrates.
As for the food type, you could feed your dog with homemade food or commercial dog food.In fact, through my own research I discovered commercial dog food contains at least 6 deadly chemicals that have been banned from human foods because they cause cancer.
So It is important to find a good homemade dog food recipe.
